Founded in 1974, the race track was first known as Keystone. It was purchased 10 years later by ITB and renamed Philadelphia Park Racetrack. A turf course was installed and the exciting Phonebet program was implemented. In 1990 it was sold to Greenwood Racing Inc. Under new ownership, simulcasting was introduced and five off-track Turf Clubs were created. This has allowed eager horse racing fans to view and wager on great races from the world over whilst dining every day of the week. Philadelphia Park’s record handle of $501,000,000 was set in 1999. From that time various improvements have been made at Philadelphia Park horse racing track and it continues as the leading racecourse in the state of Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia Park Racetrack is best-known as host of the prestigious Pennsylvania Derby. Over the years, the derby has become a fun-filled 3 day festival featuring a 9 furlong race for 3 year olds. Starting on Labor Day weekend and ending on Labor Day itself, the festivities include a family carnival, concerts, local bands and of course unforgettable racing and wagering. Another top race at Philadelphia Park is the Cotillion Handicap, a 1 1/16 mile race for fillies. Held since 1969, the race is hosted on the first Saturday of October every year.
Philadelphia Park offers racegoers an amazing experience with fantastic facilities and outstanding services. The main track itself is a dirt oval of 1 mile. The inner turf course is a 7 furlong oval. Post times are 12:35 pm. A racing seminar takes place every second Saturday for free. This seminar gives patrons of Philadelphia Park Racetrack a chance to meet management, get a real handle on the track and betting as well as to ask questions.
