Timonium Horse Racing Track in Maryland
Timonium Race Track in Baltimore, Maryland, is a prime summer thoroughbred racing venue. Horse racing events are held in conjunction with the fun-filled Maryland State Fair. With great facilities and great horse racing, the fair at the Timonium Fairgrounds should not be missed.
Timonium Race Course has a relatively long and interesting history. Back in 1879 a group of businessmen in Maryland established the State Fair. They decided to lease a 37 acre piece of land, naming it the Timonium Estate. The Maryland County Fair was first held in September of 1879, and thoroughbred horse racing was introduced to the State Fair in Timonium during 1887. In 1943, during World War Two, Timonium fairgrounds was rented out to the United States Army as a storage area and vehicle repair center. Between the 1980s and 1990s Timonium race track’s facilities were improved and expanded.
Maryland’s Timonium typically holds a brief meet of around 8 days every year during the State Fair. The race track at Timonium is an oval dirt track of 5/8 mile. A number of exciting racing events are hosted here and include the Alma North Handicap, Bobby Hale Stakes, Winning Colors Stakes, Taking Risk Stakes and Linkage Stakes. Races usually begin at 1:00 pm. In addition to the thrilling live racing held at Timonium Race Track, patrons can also take full advantage of simulcast racing from tracks throughout the country.
Over and Above the top-class racing excitement of the Maryland State Fair in Timonium, there is an abundance of fun fair activities. On the cards are livestock shows, agricultural exhibits, horse shows, craft displays, farm product competitions, barn tours, a birthing center, Animal World, pig racing and more. The Foods Pavilion offers a great selection of tasty foods. Meals can also be enjoyed at the Track Dining Room. There is parking available at the Fairgrounds, however, it is limited. A Light Rail stop is situated near the entrance of Timonium Fairgrounds. A bus service also runs from the Baltimore University Hospital, via Towson, to Timonium.
