Founded in 1870, Pimlico Race Course first hosted the Preakness Stakes in the year 1873. Pimlico is also known for the 1938 Pimlico Special when Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in front of 43,000 spectators. Under the current ownership of Magna Entertainment Corp., Pimlico race track has developed into a top thoroughbred racing facility. Encompassing an area of 140 acres within Baltimore City, Pimlico Race Course features a main oval loam track of 1 mile with a 6 furlong chute and 1 1/14 mile chute for additional racing area. The final stretch measures in at 1,152 feet and the width of the track is 70 feet. An inner turf track of 7/8 mile was added in 1954. The grass is a blend of Kentucky fescue, Kentucky Blue and common rye and is maintained at a height of 4 to 5 inches. Sufficient stabling for 1,000 horses ensures that all racing steeds are well cared for. A number of exciting race events are run during the season from April to June. Graded stakes run at Pimlico, aside from the famed Preakness Stakes, include the Pimlico Special, Argent Dixie Stakes, Gallorette Handicap, Pimlico Breeders’ Cup Distaff Handicap, Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, Hirsch Jacobs Stakes, Maryland Breeders’ Cup Handicap, Adena Stallions’ Miss Preakness Stakes, Safely Kept Breeders’ Cup Stakes and William Donald Schaefer Handicap. The post time is 1:10 pm, except on Preakness Day when it is at 10:30 am.
Pimlico Race Course offers fantastic facilities for the convenience and enjoyment of racegoers. The entire establishment has a capacity of 14,852. Race fans can place their wagers at 750 betting windows as well as several automated betting machines. Simulcast racing and wagering is available to patrons on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
