Kentucky Race Tracks
The Commonwealth of Kentucky in the United States is well known for it bluegrass music, bourbon distilleries, thoroughbred horse breeding and horse racing. This vibrant Southern state is clearly not short on hospitality and this is evident at Kentucky's horse racing tracks, the majority of which, in addition to the main attraction of horse racing, offer activities for the whole family to enjoy. Located on Central Avenue in Louisville, Churchill Downs is the home of the renowned annual Kentucky Derby. This National Historic Landmark was originally opened in 1897 and has played host to a multitude of famous horses, jockeys, trainers and owners through the years. Lexington's Keeneland Race Track featured in the racing scenes of the heart-warming movie "Seabiscuit". Also in Lexington, is the Red Mile Race Track, taking its name from its renowned track and firmly at the center of the horse breeding Bluegrass Region. Other race tracks in Kentucky include the Ellis Park Race Track, Kentucky Downs and Turfway Park.
Kentucky’s horse racing industry has a history spanning more than a century and is currently regulated by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC). The purpose of the commission to maintain the integrity of horse racing in Kentucky, by overseeing each licensed meet and ensuring compliance to the rules and regulations as set out by the KHRC for the welfare of the horses, and benefit of the horse racing industry.
