Delaware Park in Delaware's Wilmington was originally opened in 1937. A well-known horse racing track, Delaware Park also houses a casino and golf course. Racing both thoroughbreds and Arabians, Delaware Park race track (or DelPark) continues to grow in popularity.
Delaware Park was designed by William DuPont Jr. back in 1937. Originally an open-air grandstand and Clubhouse, the race track had to be closed during World War Two. It was reopened in 1944, with improvements being made during 1958, including a new clubhouse as well as a larger grandstand.
Between April and November stunning thoroughbreds and Arabians can be seen thundering along the 1 mile oval dirt track with its chutes. An inner turf course of 7 furlongs is also used for racing events. Interestingly, Delaware Park race track is 1 of 12 race tracks in the United States to host pari-mutuel Arabian racing. Thoroughbred races run at DelPark include the Stymie Stake, Sweet n Sassy, Delaware Oaks, Delaware Handicap, Kent Breeders’ Cup, Endine, and the Justakiss Stake. Arabians can be seen racing in the Liberty Bell Arabian Overnight, CRE Run Arabian Oaks, Arabian Cup Juvenile Fillies, Arabian Cup Classic, Arabian Cup Sprint and more. Bets can be placed at seller’s windows and self-service machines located throughout the facility.
Horse racing at Delaware Park is not the only entertainment on offer. Many visit the track to try their luck at the 2,500 slot machines located on two floors of the main building. Children are also kept busy with a fun inflatable playground, and there is always plenty to dine on at Delaware Park race track with many eateries to choose from. The stunning new golf course, White Clay Creek Country Club, offers golf enthusiasts an 18-hole world-class course.
