Bay Meadows Race Course in California
Just an hour from the city of San Francisco you will find one of California’s oldest racetracks. The Bay Meadows Racecourse has been in operation since 1934 and, unlike many of the racetracks in the rest of the country, it did not cease to hold races during World War II when there was an international ban on racing. In fact the races at Bay Meadows often continue to be held despite inclement weather so regardless of how things look when you plan to go, you can be almost certain that you will get to see your race.
Bay Meadows Racecourse is situated on S Delaware Street in San Mateo, California. It’s main trail is a one-mile oval while the turf course measures 7 furlongs and 32 feet. The home stretch is average in length and measures about 990 feet but it still makes for exciting racing. There is enough seating for 12,000 people and there is stabling for approximately 900 horses. From fairly early in the track’s history, it has enjoyed pari-mutuel wagering, the first all-enclosed starting gate, a totalizator board, the still popular Daily Double and the photo finish-camera. Races are generally run here between May and June, October and December and in August during the Bay Meadows Fair.

A favourite aspect of gambling on the track is the Bay Meadow’s Pick Six night where gamblers are able to win a fortune if their chosen horses win in six separate races. The racetrack has also hosted a number of harness races and quarter horse racing meets but the focus has always been on thoroughbred racing as these races draw larger revenues. Bay Meadows currently hosts the Bay Meadows Breeder’s Cup Handicap, the Bay Meadows Derby, the El Camino Real Derby, Seabiscuit Handicap.
