Newcastle Race Course in England
Newcastle Racecourse in High Gosforth Park held its first event in 1882. It has become a well-known Grade 1 dual code track offering 26 meetings throughout the year, with the renowned Northumberland Plate Festival. Within the bounds of the racecourse there are also two golf courses, a nature reserve and conferencing facilities. With outstanding racing and world-class facilities, Newcastle Racecourse provides racegoers with a magical race day experience.
Between its establishment and the 1990s, Newcastle Racecourse fell into a state of disrepair, before being rescused by Northern Racing in 1994, whereupon a range of new facilities were installed, including stands and a flat track.
Newcastle Racecourse’s flat course is a left-handed oval of 1¾ miles with an uphill run-in of 4 furlongs – a real test of stamina. The National Hunt Course is also left-handed, measuring 1 mile 6 furlongs and ends with an uphill.
Newcastle’s biggest event is the Northumberland Plate Festival, usually held around June/July. This three-day event was first held in 1833 at a different venue before being moved to High Gosforth Park. Previously known as Pitmen’s Derby, the race has the most impressive 2 mile Handicap you’ll come across. Other popular events include Beeswing Ladies Day, Blaydon Races, Pertemps Fighting Fithe Hurdle, Christmas Hurdle Raceday and Tote Eider. There are several bookmaker and Tote facilities dotting the racecourse for the convenience of racegoers.
Newcastle Racecourse has a number of excellent amenities. Amongst these are free parking, family entertainment, facilities for the disabled, restaurants and bars. The gates open about two hours before the beginning of the day’s first race. Newcastle Racecourse is easily accessible by road 3 miles to the north of Newcastle town center. It is also just 10 minutes away from Newcastle International Airport and 15 minutes from the train station.
Horse racing enthusiasts will be absolutely delighted with Newcastle Racecourse‘s year-round calendar, high-class racing and brilliant facilities.
