Somethinaboutlaura Continues Racing in 2008
Somethinaboutlaura is considered by many to be a living legend in Northern California’s horse racing circles. After Somethingaboutlaura won the Pacific Heights Stakes on 1 December 2007, horse racing fans were disappointed to hear from her trainer and co-owner Jerry Holldendorfer that she was likely to run only two more races before being sold for breeding purposes or retired. This situation changed, however, when Somethinaboutlaura raced to victory in the Campanile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on 1 January 2008 and now she is set to race right through 2008.
As one of the most consistent and versatile horses in Northern California’s horse racing history, Somethinaboutlaura has a large following of fans among horse racing enthusiasts in the area. Hollendorfer appreciates that it is rare for a horse to win as many races as Somethinaboutlaura. Together with the other three owners, John Sikura, Charles Miller and George Todaro, Hollendorf considers himself lucky to be an owner of this exceptional six year old mare which they bought in February 2006 for $375,000. Somethinaboutlaura’s victory in the Campanile Stakes was her 18th win in 31 starts. The winner’s purse of $45,000 brought her career earnings to a total of $1,053,865.
Jockey Russell Baze has found Somethinaboutlaura to be a pleasure to ride as she determinedly sets out to win any race she participates in. In the Campanile Stakes she took the lead from the start and despite being challenged by Eastlake Avenue and Wild Promises, she streaked through the finish line one-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Wild Promises.
Somethinaboutlaura’s next race is likely to be in the Sunshine Millions program at Santa Anita on 26 January where she could either compete in the Filly and Mare Sprint or the Filly and Mare Turf. There is also a possibility of her running in the Distaff at Gulfstream Park.
Somethinaboutlaura has a track record that shows that she is capable of doing just about anything in horse racing. She has claimed victory on synthetic, dirt and grass surfaces over various distances. There is every reason to believe that 2008 will see Somethinaboutlaura finishing her racing career on a winning streak.
