Kentucky Derby Victory for Super Saver
The Kentucky Derby was run for the 136th time at Churchill Downs on Saturday, 1 May 2010. A star studded line-up of celebrities attended this prestigious event, including Smokey Robinson, Nick Lacey, Vanessa Milano, Diane Lane, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, Pete Wentz, Randall Wallace, Jaime Pressly, Simran Singh and Cal Ripken Jr. But not even the stars of the world could take away the moment of glory and celebration from Super Saver after he made his way to the winner’s circle to have the title of Kentucky Derby champion bestowed on him.
The weather had beaten down on Churchill Downs and the surrounding areas, with flashfloods and unpredictable shifts in weather patterns making the news. This left the track at the racecourse sloppy and wet, but nothing could dampen the high spirits of contenders and spectators. As the starting gates filled up and the anticipation grew amongst those in the grandstands, Super Saver was getting reading to deliver a breathtaking performance under the guidance of jockey Calvin Borel.
Super Saver will now find himself under some pressure, as everyone will be wondering if he will be able to deliver the same quality performance at the Preakness Stakes, which is the second leg of the Triple Crown, and takes place on 15 May 2010 at Pimlico. The talented Ice Box, trained by Nick Zito, finished in second place, with Paddy O Prado in third. Todd Pletcher, Super Saver’s trainer, was overjoyed at the victory, and will now begin discussions with the horse’s owners to confirm if he will be participating in the Preakness Stakes. So far, possible contenders for the upcoming event are as follows: Aikenite, Bushwacked, Hurricane Ike, Ice Box, A Little Warm, Dublin, Pleasant Prince, Jackson Bend, Caracortado, Super Saver, Paddy O Prado, Lookin At Lucky, Turf Melody and Schoolyard Dreams. Nick Zito is still unsure if Ice Box will be running in the Preakness Stakes, as he is concerned that he might be asking too much of this late-blooming colt. But with the second event of the Triple Crown looming, spectators are already beginning to speculate and anticipate the outcome. No doubt that all eyes will be on Super Saver.
