Towards a Better Horse Racing Future

The fervent support horse racing enjoys from its followers, is not shared by important pressure groups in society. There are many influential groups who raise their collective voices against aspects of horse racing which are not generally liked or understood. Since horse racing has such an ancient, global, and treasured past, those of us who love the sport should plan for its stable future as well.

The strongest roots of horse racing lie in equestrian love. One could take to auto racing or to poker, were it not for the fascination and abiding love we share for horses! Childhood is the best time for individuals to imbibe love for horses, and parents should make it a point to teach their children to ride. There is nothing like spending quality time at the stables to nurture an undying commitment to horses in general, and to develop an interest in horse racing as one grows older.

Horse racing has traditionally scored over other forms of gambling because the majority of promoters in this sport have taken pains to keep cheaters out. Nevertheless, reports of collusion between jockeys and others do surface from time to time, and owners are known to resort to sharp practices at times, to claim or to declare their horses at inopportune moments. The sport also suffers from illegal gambling circuits in some parts of the world, where local governments are deprived of their legitimate shares of revenues. We, as horse racing lovers, need to do more to keep the sport clean and above board!

Bringing veterinary care more in line with modern orthopedics available for humans, is another frontier for horse racing lovers to reach. Accidents are inevitable, especially on natural surfaces with uneven textures. The sight of a horse stumbling is heart rending, and putting down animals is a barbaric practice by 21st century standards. We have to pile pressure on surgeons to use better and more humane methods!

Horse racing, like other forms of recreation, has issues which its stakeholders must resolve. There may be no ready and easy answers, but we still owe it to the sustainability needs of the sport, to take contingent action around the major threats that the sport faces.
