The financial monopoly of Mather and Company has driven a nail in to Flathead Horse Racing. The County Board, after much controversy, has unanimously voted to drop all 2006 horse racing events at the Northwest Montana Fair. The huge increase in insurance for jockeys has killed the sport for thousands for enthusiastic spectators. It will deprive owners, jockeys, bookmakers and punters to follow their vocations and interests, and will hurt other stakeholders such as breeders in the long run.

400 Years of Horse Racing History
The Newmarket area in London has witnessed horse racing since the 17th century. It continues to be a major center for the sport of horce racing and horse racing history to this day, which must be a world record for any kind of outdoor recreation activity. It is similar to the Bluegrass area of Lexington, Kentucky, but two hundred years, and now in the midst of a more urban setting. Native Indians must have enjoyed some form of horse racing before our forefathers arrived on the continent, and it is a great pity that we have no records of this, though Aleutians were known for great skills of horsemanship.

A festival is on at the famous Cheltenham race track in the UK until this Friday March 17. The first two days have been difficult for wagers, with intense competition for places and wins. Thursday March 16 is no different, with Golden Cross and Derby winning rider Johnny Murtagh astride Golden Cross. Mighty Man and Ambobo are other challengers for the legendary 11-year old Francois Doumen trained Baracouda. This magnificent race horse has always had a place in the World Hurdle, but the fact that it has not raced for a year now could go against its chances of making a hat-trick of wins and places in this great event.
