Denman Honored as Horse of the Year

In 2006, the British Horseracing Board and the Irish Turf Club joined forces to present an awards evening that honored the performances and contributions that top horses have made in the sport of jump racing. A panel of judges, made up of members of both the Irish Turf Club and the British Horseracing Board, is selected to vote for the horses that they believe made deserving efforts during a racing season. For the 2008 Anglo-Irish Jump Awards, the honors went to some of the big names in jump racing, and most were as much deserved as they were expected.

Zarkava Magic at French 1000 Guineas

The French 1000 Guineas was held at Longchamp over the weekend, and as the field for the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, started making their way to the starting gates, many eyes were following the 4-9 racing favorite, Zarkava. She is a filly that likes to ease into her race, starting slowly out of the starting gates, biding her time and then waiting for the signal from her jockey, that the time is right to open the power reserves, and on Sunday, 11 May 2008, she did it in style.

Gallyn Mitchell Heading For Glory

Emerald Downs in Auburn is a racecourse that is known for its spectacular live horse racing events and the fun and entertaining activities it provides for the public to participate in. This year however, most of the attention is being focused on one of the resident jockeys at Emerald Downs, Gallyn Mitchell. If everything goes according to plan for the jockey and his agent and wife, Denise Mitchell, he will be making racecourse history at Emerald Downs.

Casino Drive Overwhelms Competition in the Peter Pan Stakes

No-one has more faith in Casino Drive, than his owner, Hidetoshi Yamamoto, and his trainer, Kazuo Fujisawa. Together, they have carefully and slowly nurtured the yearling, which Yamamoto purchased in 2006, for $950 000. Casino Drive arrived in United States from Japan on the 30th of April, not only to make his American debut but to get a training race in, before the Belmont Stakes. And while Casino Drive was enjoying his second start to his racing career and first horse racing event in over two months, spectators were astonished and in disbelief, as the chestnut comfortably glided across the finish line.

Bay Meadows Racecourse Closes Down

Bay Meadows Racecourse in San Mateo County, opened for the first time in 1934. It is one of the oldest racetracks, and it is rich in history and fond memories for those who have faithfully been attending live horse racing in the past seventy four years. Bay Meadows Racecourse has also welcomed legendary racehorses, such as Cigar, Citation, Silky Sullivan and John Henry to its grounds. In 1938, thousands of spectators came from far and wide, to witness Seabiscuit make history on the track. All these moments of loss and victory, came to an end on Sunday 11 May 2008, with the last day of the final racing season at Bay Meadows Racecourse.

Preakness Fever in Full Swing

The Preakness Stakes takes place at Pimlico on 17 May 2008 and already the contenders for this legendary racing event are training in anticipation of race day. Kentucky Bear is the first horse to arrive at Pimlico, but it does not mean that other contenders are resting on their laurels. Everywhere, the magnificent racehorses participating in the Preakness Stakes are being put through their paces before they travel to the second racing event in the Triple Crown.

Bulwark takes Chester Roodee Racecourse by Surprise

On Wednesday, 7 May 2008, approximately eighteen thousand spectators filled the Chester Roodee Racecourse in anticipation of the Chester Cup. Bustling with excitement, bets were made on the winning favorites for the day. The name Bulwark had hardly featured, ending up as the 33-1 long shot. Many times before fans had placed money on Bulwark only to be disappointed by his seeming lack of interest, when all he needed was a little understanding and a fresh start.
